Job Description

If you enjoy seeing a project through from start to finish, a career in retail development might be just the career for you. Retail development encompasses the economic activities that help acquire, improve, lease, or secure real estate or goods for a retail location.

For instance, if a restaurant wants to open a new location, the retail development agent will search for a location that meets the criteria for opening a new location. The agent will also secure the goods needed for the retail facility to operate.

For a fast-action pizza chain, this might mean finding a suitable franchise location, ensuring that all ordinances and permits are in order, managing the sale or lease of the property, and ensuring that all equipment and products get to the store before the planned opening.

But retail development jobs cover a broad spectrum of careers, from human resources to management to sales and marketing to logistics and supply chain jobs.

A district manager, for example, helps with developing new store outlets by managing incoming store inventory at the regional level, hiring and training supervisory managers for a particular region, and monitoring each store’s operations and sales volume.

Retail Development Salaries

New York pays higher salaries for retail development jobs than any other state. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a retail development manager can earn $55.60 per hour, or $115,640 a year. Retail operations managers and district managers make similar salaries.

However, some industries will pay less, and some will pay more. For instance, a retail operations manager in the food industry will earn an average salary of $38.96 an hour, or $81,030 per year.
